Chile

The first of 33 miners entombed for two months was hoisted to the surface at 11:11 PM Chilean time. They are emerging from the darkness.

  1. "More reaction from those who are neither Chilean, nor miners, yet find themselves hooked on the drama. Gemma in Newcastle, UK, writes: 'I shed a tear at the first miner appearing. The strength of the human spirit is beautiful and awe inspiring.' "

Ditto for the strength of Paul & Zabeth Bayne. I hope that soon we will be rejoicing their reunion with their children.

  2. When people can see real drama unfold before their eyes, then they can form connections with the event. It sells news.

In the case of child protection, we never actually physically see the trauma of children being removed and kept from their families. What we can't see and film, news can't sell.

Also, child protection matters are not blame-free events, as are accidents, kidnappings or lost children.

Perhaps news agencies are not sure if they can safely root for the parents because it could turn out later their trust has been betrayed if parents are found guilty.

With miners stuck in a cave-in, there is no such danger of misplaced trust, only anticipation of a positive outcome, with the threat of death if the rescue fails.

The Baynes situation is probably as close as we can get to seeing a real, live, child-protection equivalent of a cave-in and pending rescue, there just isn't the same news coverage for reasons unknown to me.

Parents who have faced child protection should take comfort in knowing that they can lock arms with like minded souls, and eventually inspire others NOT personally affected to join in condeming current child removal practices.
