Evidence Based Medicine and Social Investigation Conference

We are pleased to announce our fourth annual E.B.M.S.I. conference, designed for both families falsely accused of child abuse and professionals and paraprofessionals who work with child abuse cases. The faculty includes physicians and attorneys, expert witnesses and advocates, and social service professionals. These experts come ready to work with and learn from each other and the attendees.

The conference curriculum covers the fundamentals of evidence-based medicine and its role in improving how investigators and decision makers handle suspected abuse cases. The goal is to help child protection services truly meet the needs of children and their families and to help the legal system handle these difficult cases more justly.

Topics include:

• The evolving child abuse medical literature 
• Medical mimics of abuse 
• Defending against abuse allegations in both family and criminal court 
• The standards and guidelines for child protection investigations and process 
• The challenges of creating a bureaucracy to handle family matters

THE FIFTH ESTATE AND AN SBS DOCUMENTARY IN SEPTEMBER / 596

The Fifth Estate has a lengthy record of confronting ethical issues and doing it well. It is a form of journalism and the stories that are tackled have a high risk factor. That is, the people whose stories are told have faced and may still face profound consequences. They voluntarily provide information because they cannot evade the compelling conviction that the stories are too important to remain silent. These are brave people and fortunately Fifth Estate producers and directors are determined to treat these subjects with care.

This September, CBC’s Fifth Estate will air a documentary concerning Shaken Baby Syndrome. To that end, a crew were in attendance at last weekend’s Conference on Evidence Based Medicine and Social Investigation. The venue was advantageous for the producers because Dr. Chris Van Ee and numerous other experts were presenters and were willing to be interviewed.

At last weekend’s conference entitled, EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE AND SOCIAL INVESTIGATION, two of the speakers during the Saturday morning schedule, were Ray Ferris and Doug Christie. These have become friends of mine, casual, men whom I respect. Both of these men as many of you now know, have been instrumental in assisting the Baynes particularly through the course of the multi-months court hearing in 2010. Ray’s knowledge of the Child, Family and Community Services Act, and the operations of the Ministry of Children and Family Development child protection process was immensely helpful to the Baynes as well as to Mr. Christie. Mr. Christie’s courtroom experience, his logic and perceptivity as well as communication skill was crucial to the case outcome.

We have become large on privacy matters. Companies and corporations are bound now by privacy law which affects what information can be published with regard to employees, partners and clients. But we are a confused society. Our privacy is forfeited at every turn. We are all under surveillance whenever we walk beneath street cameras, swipe cards, surf the net. Increasingly sophisticated computer systems now track for companies and government what you are searching online whether you are at home or work. Surveillance was once a word associated only with law enforcement but is now an unavoidable aspect of life in our world.

This time the interview is not about Zabeth's own family per se, but about the ambitious Conference that she and her husband Paul and some associates have organized. This is the Evidence Based Medicine and Social Investigation Conference scheduled for August 4-6, 2011. During this interview, one of the presenters will join the conversation by telephone.

PART FOUR OF FIVE
Medical practice and the practice of child welfare continue an integral interaction. The Ministry of Children and Family Development responds regularly to calls requiring intervention into suspected non accidental injuries of children or to calls of neglect of children. When services intervene in the lives of other citizens, they must do so based on best evidence available with regard to the probable consequences of that intervention. Evidence based practice (EBP) is a theme which one can locate readily on the internet. Many professional practices are addressing the need.  

Definition: Evidence based practice is the diligent, precise and prudent use of recent best evidence for making clinical practice and policy decisions. It has become unmistakable that current criticisms of certain child protection cases in British Columbia point to the need to prioritize EBP. The Evidence Based and Social Investigation Conference which this blog site has been advertising these past several days will apply that definition to child welfare. Blog Post 545 presented the schedule of experts who will be in attendance to apply this definition.
